Facebook ad placements for leads: keep, fix or test?
Our suggestion is to start with Advantage+ placements and restrict a placement, including Audience Network, only for a specific reason you can test. First check eligible delivery, creative fit and traceable customer outcomes. A cheap click alone does not settle the decision.

What do automatic and manual placements actually decide?
They decide the eligible places for delivery; the report tells you where delivery actually happened. Meta’s 2023 lead-generation guide recommends Advantage+ placements in its forms, messaging and calling plans. That dated recommendation is not a guarantee that every placement supports every current lead setup.
The current Placement Targeting reference, checked 19 Oct 2026, says placement options depend on the objective. Leaving a placement field unspecified makes Meta consider:
all possible default positions
| What it establishes | What it does not establish | |
|---|---|---|
| Configured selection | The platforms/positions requested for the ad set. | That every requested position is compatible or received spend. |
| Effective selection | Which placements apply under the objective and other delivery settings. | That the budget will be divided evenly across them. |
| Delivered breakdown | Where the reported impressions, spend or supported results occurred. | What would happen after removing one of those places. |
In the Marketing API, read an effective placement by putting effective_ before the placement field name, as the reference describes.
There is also a separate limited-spend option for excluded placements:
If you use placement controls to exclude certain placements for your ad sets, you can allow up to 5% of your spend to be allocated to each excluded placement when it's likely to improve performance.
Meta documents this as a separate setting, placement_soft_opt_out, that can be passed or read on an ad set.
The reference does not say whether it is on by default or how it appears in Ads Manager, so check the ad set rather than assume it.
For a Facebook-versus-Instagram comparison, use the platform comparison guide. This check concerns the specific surface, its usable creative and traceable customer outcome.
When should you fix, measure or test a restriction?
Our suggestion is to choose the action from the evidence, rather than start with a universal list of places to remove.
| Evidence you have | Our next action | |
|---|---|---|
| The offer is cut off | Text, the service detail or contact action is unreadable in a delivered format. | Repair that asset or destination, check the intended customer route and record the change before judging the placement. |
| The result cannot be traced | The report has spend, but CRM outcomes have no usable placement key. | Improve measurement and keep an unknown bucket. Do not manufacture a qualified-lead or sales rate for the row. |
| The row is thin | Little delivery or few mature outcomes; one complaint is the only quality evidence. | Record the issue and gather relevant evidence within an agreed spend limit. Do not turn a small row into a universal placement rule. |
| The problem is repeatable | A meaningful business issue remains after fit, tracking and follow-up checks. | Write a testable restriction proposal, an outcome definition and a reversal condition. Check the whole campaign after the change. |
Audience Network is a separate publishing platform in Meta’s reference, with its own positions and publisher-exclusion controls, including app-store or domain block lists. That description is not a lead-quality rating. The sources checked here do not establish a universal ranking of good and bad lead placements.
Investigate a pattern of genuinely unsuitable enquiries wherever it appears, including the promise, route and follow-up. Use the clicks-to-leads diagnostic when the failure occurs across placements; do not repeat the same broken journey in a narrower selection.
What should you inspect in the creative before excluding a placement?
Inspect whether the service promise and next action remain readable in the actual format and destination. Start with a person trying to understand the offer on a phone, not a file that merely passed upload.
- Read the message. Can the person see the service, area, price basis where needed and next step without guessing what was cropped?
- Check the route. Open the intended destination and complete the enquiry process in the same language and context.
- Give the creative owner a specific fault. Save the affected rendition and the missing information, then request a suitable asset.
- Check compatibility. Confirm the current format specifications and supported options for that particular placement and campaign before publishing.
Meta’s Placement Asset Customization guide documents using different creative assets for different placements. Its existing-post qualification matters: customization of existing posts is no longer supported through that API; the document directs that option to Ads Manager. For how engagement totals behave when a Facebook post is advertised in an Instagram placement, see using an existing post in a Facebook ad.
Meta’s Placement Targeting table lists two Audience Network positions: classic and rewarded_video.
Its Placement Asset Customization page lists three: classic, instream_video and rewarded_video.
The campaign reference names classic and instream_video under its Brand awareness objective row.
Meta’s Help table for the Leads objective lists Audience Network native, banner, interstitial and rewarded video; it does not list in-stream there.
The documents do not explain the difference. Our reading: no list here is a complete or current compatibility table; check the position in your own ad set.
The Help table covers placements supported through Facebook’s API for all advertisers; Ads Manager and partner interfaces may not yet provide access to all API supported placements.
This guide does not prescribe one universal image-size table.
Can your CRM really tell which placement brought a customer?
Only assign a customer outcome to a placement when the recorded evidence supports that link. Our reading: an ad identifier alone cannot identify one placement if that ad ran in several places.
Meta’s Insights breakdown documentation distinguishes publisher_platform from platform_position, and supports the combined breakdown. It also says breakdown values are estimated and documents restrictions on action metrics and combinations. Do not treat a missing or unsupported metric as a measured zero.
Invented example: one ad, two delivered rows
Suppose the same ad has $300 of Feed spend and $100 of Audience Network spend. The CRM records 4 sales with that ad ID but no placement information. Every number here is invented to demonstrate a missing key.
| Observed in the illustration | What you can conclude | |
|---|---|---|
| Feed | $300 of the ad’s spend. | The delivery report assigns this spend to Feed. |
| Audience Network | $100 of the ad’s spend. | The delivery report assigns this spend to Audience Network. |
| CRM sales | 4 sales associated with the ad; placement unknown. | The ad has recorded sales, but these records cannot split them between the two placements. |
Assigning 3 sales to Feed and 1 to Audience Network because the spend split is 75%/25% would be an assumption, not an observation. Nor does the table prove that the placement with the smaller spend produced poor leads. Keep those 4 sales under unknown placement until there is appropriate evidence.
Ask the tracking owner which source field actually preserves platform or position and at what level it can be matched. A platform-only label does not establish Feed versus Reels. Use the CRM-to-ad matching guide for the broader reconciliation workflow.
How should you test a placement change for lead quality?
Our suggestion is to test one justified restriction against a defined business result while keeping its evidence limits visible. A delivered-row comparison describes the configuration that ran; it is not a controlled estimate of the outcome after removing that row.
Some Sales and Leads ad sets were reported to lose placement exclusions in Aug 2026 (third party, unconfirmed by Meta here); if yours has, a restriction test is unavailable, while creative and measurement checks still apply.
Define a useful enquiry in business terms, such as a real request for an available service in the area you serve. Keep follow-up rules and outcome maturity comparable, and record any budget, audience, creative or offer changes that could explain a difference.
- Write the hypothesis. Name the suspected placement problem, the evidence and the intended restriction, including any limited-spend setting.
- Choose the comparison. If the business can support a controlled experiment, use the A/B-testing guide to plan it. An ordinary before/after comparison does not isolate causality.
- Agree the limits. Choose acceptable spend and a check date using the actual lead-to-sale delay, not a universal number of days.
- Assess the whole result. Compare mature useful enquiries, bookings or sales and total spend. A tidier placement report can still accompany a worse acquisition result.
If tracking cannot support a placement-level outcome, first measure at a level it can support and disclose the limitation. For form qualification rather than placement selection, use the lead-quality guide.
What can Variafy show by placement?
Variafy can read Meta performance by platform and position and show spend, reported results and their type. The implementation checked on 19 Oct 2026 also reports coverage, so a partial response should remain partial.
When matched payments carry placement information in their tags, its placement analysis can show that payment grouping separately. Without payments sent in with placement tags, only spend and Meta-reported results remain. The code also distinguishes Meta placement names from payment-tag names instead of blindly dividing one table by the other.
A prompt that keeps missing evidence visible
“Show reported Meta spend and result type by platform and position for the dates I specify. State coverage. Separately show matched payments only at the level supported by their tags, including unknowns. Identify a creative check or test question; make no placement changes.”
Variafy is in the free beta. This workflow reads and proposes checks; account changes require human approval. Join the free beta.
What should a placement decision brief contain?
Keep the selection evidence, creative fault and business measurement in separate fields before approving a change. This is our suggested handover format, not a Meta scoring formula.
| Record | Filled example · service enquiries | |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | Configured and effective placements, objective and destination; any limited-spend exclusion. | The operator confirms which placements can deliver before proposing a restriction. |
| Creative | Affected rendition, customer-visible fault and asset owner. | The service name is cropped; the creative owner supplies a readable version. |
| Measurement | Outcome definition, mapping level, unknown bucket, period and maturity. | The CRM knows the ad but not the placement, so sales remain unknown by placement. |
| Decision | Hypothesis, approver, spend limit, check date and reversal condition. | Repair fit and mapping first; test a restriction only if the customer problem persists with usable evidence. |
A useful decision explains what the customer could see and what the business could measure. It does not need a universal blacklist of placements to produce a concrete next action.
How we checked
Checked on 19 Oct 2026 against 6 public Meta documents: Placement Targeting, Insights API Breakdowns, Placement Asset Customization, the campaign reference, and the Help table Available ad placements and ad formats by ad objectives;
the 2023 Lead Generation Guide (all 8 PDF pages). The older guide and the campaign reference’s legacy objective rows are not used as a current compatibility table.
Questions
Should I use Advantage+ or manual placements for leads?
Our suggestion is to start with Advantage+ placements, confirm eligibility and creative fit, then test a restriction for a specific business reason with reliable evidence. Meta’s older lead-generation guide recommends Advantage+ placements, but that is not proof that every surface supports every current setup.
Should I turn off Audience Network for lead generation?
Do not decide from the name or a low click price alone. Check eligibility, creative fit and traceable customer outcomes; the sources checked here do not establish that Audience Network universally produces worse leads.
Why might an excluded placement still receive spend?
If limited spend was set for it: Meta’s Placement Targeting reference documents an option allowing up to 5% of your spend to each excluded placement when likely to improve performance. Check placement_soft_opt_out on the ad set; its default and Ads Manager interface are not established by that reference.
What size should my ad be for each placement?
Check the current accepted format and rendition for each placement in the actual campaign setup. Our suggested check is that the service promise and next action remain readable; a single universal dimensions table would not establish compatibility across every objective and format.
Can I match CRM sales to placements using the ad ID?
An ad ID alone does not isolate a placement when the ad ran in more than one. Use a genuine recorded placement or platform key at the supported level, keep unknowns separate, and do not allocate sales in proportion to spend as though measured.
Does a placement breakdown prove which one to remove?
It describes reported delivery under the settings that ran. Use it to form a check or experiment, then assess the whole campaign’s mature business result; removing a row changes the conditions.
