Instagram ads vs Facebook ads: which is cheaper for leads?
Instagram and Facebook ads are the same system: one Ads Manager, one auction, one budget — the platform is just a placement. So “which is cheaper” has no general answer, and Meta publishes none. It recommends running both with Advantage+ placements and warns against switching off a placement because its average cost looks higher: the system aims for the lowest cost overall, not per placement. For lead businesses, audiences differ more than prices — in the US, Facebook reaches more people aged 30 to 64, Instagram more under 30. Lead forms work on both. Check your own placement breakdown, and judge by leads that buy.

Are Facebook ads and Instagram ads the same?
Yes, in everything but placement. You create one campaign in Ads Manager; at the ad set level, placements decide whether it
runs in Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Stories, Reels and other places. Instagram placements include feed, stories, reels, profile feed and
search; Facebook adds Marketplace, video feeds and more. One change for 2026: The Instagram Explore Feed placement is no longer available.

The same ad, the same lead form and the same budget can serve on both — and by default they do.
Which is cheaper for leads?
Meta doesn’t publish cost per lead by platform, and the figures in blog posts point in opposite directions without saying where
they come from. Meta’s position is to let the system choose: ad sets with Advantage+ placements delivered an 11.7% lower cost per action (CPA) on average
than manual placements in an experiment it doesn’t date (source).
We don’t recommend removing a placement just because it has shown higher costs to date
The reason is the breakdown effect: the system aims for the lowest average cost overall - not the lowest average cost for each placement
(source). In Meta’s own example, removing the “expensive” Instagram Stories placement left the campaign with fewer results
for about the same money. A placement that looks dear on average may be buying your cheapest marginal leads.
Who you reach on each

| Ages 30–49 | 80% | 62% |

For a clinic, a school for adults or a home service, Facebook reaches more of the 30–64 age group; Instagram is stronger under 30. This is reach, not cost per lead, and it’s US data — there’s no comparable Pew survey for Europe.
Lead forms on Instagram
Instagram does run lead forms — a common myth says otherwise. Meta: Your lead ads, such as lead ads with instant form, can run across both Facebook and Instagram.
(source) Differences to know:
- Lead ads appear only in the Instagram mobile app, not on desktop.
- Store locator and appointment request questions aren’t shown on Instagram; the ad still runs without them.
- The higher intent form type delivers only to Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed on mobile (source).
More on forms: lead quality and which performance goal to choose.
Can you run ads only on Instagram?
Usually yes: in the ad set, choose manual placements and keep only Instagram. Two caveats for 2026:
- Jon Loomer reported in August 2026 that some Sales and Leads ad sets show
Excluding placements, platforms, devices and operating systems will no longer be available for your ad sets.
— a test in some accounts that Meta hasn’t announced (source). - Instagram ads are built from a Facebook Page in Ads Manager; the Instagram account decides who the ad appears from.
Better than excluding a platform
Write for the placement instead of removing it: vertical 9:16 video for Stories and Reels, shorter text there, a square or 4:5 image for feeds. Meta’s placement asset customisation lets one ad use different media per placement.
How to check in your own account
- In Ads Manager, open the campaign and choose Breakdown → By delivery → Placement.
- Look at spend, leads and cost per lead per placement over at least a month — with only a few leads per placement, differences are often chance (how much).
- If your CRM can tell, compare the share of leads that buy by placement; a cheaper lead that never answers isn’t cheaper. The separate guide to Facebook ad placements for leads covers platform versus position and a worksheet for unknown payments.
- Only act on a placement that takes a real share of spend and brings no leads or sales over weeks.
See which placements bring customers: Variafy
Variafy connects ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants to your Meta ad accounts. Ask “Is Instagram or Facebook working better for us?” — it shows where the money goes by placement, what each brings and where a result costs more than across the account. It gives a verdict only on money: with payments from your CRM, a placement taking 10% or more of spend whose results differ beyond chance in both halves of the period. Cost per lead alone doesn’t hold from one month to the next, so it doesn’t judge by it.

Questions
Are Facebook ads and Instagram ads the same?
They are the same system: one Ads Manager, auction, budget and objective. Facebook and Instagram are placements; one ad can run on both, and with Advantage+ placements it does by default.
Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?
There’s no general answer and Meta publishes no figures by platform. Meta recommends Advantage+ placements, which in its experiment lowered cost per action by 11.7% on average, and advises against removing a placement just because its average cost looks higher.
Can I run lead ads on Instagram?
Yes. Instant form lead ads run on both Facebook and Instagram, but on Instagram only in the mobile app; store locator and appointment request questions aren’t shown there.
Should I run ads on Facebook or Instagram for a local business?
Usually both. In the US, Facebook reaches more adults aged 30–64, Instagram more under 30. Keep Advantage+ placements on, check the placement breakdown monthly and judge by leads that become customers.
Can I run ads only on Instagram?
Usually, by choosing manual placements and keeping only Instagram. Some Sales and Leads ad sets have lost the option to exclude placements since August 2026, in a test Meta hasn’t announced.
