How much to spend on Facebook ads: a starting budget for a lead business

Work it out from leads, not from a round number. Take the sales you want a month, divide by the share of leads that buy to get the leads you need, and multiply by your cost per lead — that’s the monthly budget. Check two limits: a lead must cost less than the profit from a sale times the share that buy, and Meta’s delivery learns best at about 50 leads a week per ad set, with a daily budget of at least 10 times your cost per lead. At the 2026 US average of $27 a lead, that’s about $200 a day per ad set — more than most small businesses spend. If you can’t reach it, run one ad set with a broad audience and judge it by leads that buy.

A budget worked out backwards: 10 new clients, 1 in 5 leads buy, 50 leads at $32 — $1,600 a month — next to Meta’s rule of a daily budget at least 10 times the cost per lead.

Start from the leads you need

  1. Sales you want from Facebook a month — say 10 new clients.
  2. Share of leads that buy — from your CRM. Say 1 in 5. So you need 50 leads.
  3. Cost per lead — your own, or a benchmark to start. WordStream and LocaliQ’s 2026 US data averages $27.39, with $32.14 for doctors and $26.31 for education (source).
  4. Budget = 50 × $32 ≈ $1,600 a month, about $53 a day.
  5. Ceiling check: a lead must cost less than profit per sale × share that buy. If a client brings $800 profit and 1 in 5 buys, a lead can cost up to $160 before you lose money.

The ceiling matters more than the average: it tells you how far cost per lead can rise before you stop (more on cost per lead).

What Meta’s delivery needs

A general rule is that your daily budget should be at least 10 times the average cost of your optimization event.

The reason is learning: an ad set leaves the learning phase after about 50 optimization events in the week after your last significant edit (source), counted for each ad set — around 50 optimized conversion events for each ad set (source). With a cost per result goal, Meta asks for a budget of at least 5 times the goal (source).

Cost per leadPer day for 50 leads a weekPer day by the 10× rulePer month for 50 a week
All industries$27.39$196$274$5,948
Education$26.31$188$263$5,713
Doctors$32.14$230$321$6,979
Home improvement$42.95$307$430$9,326
Dentists$61.56$440$616$13,367

Cost per lead from WordStream and LocaliQ’s 2026 US lead campaign averages (source); the budgets are our arithmetic. For most small businesses these numbers are out of reach — and that is normal.

If your budget is smaller

  • One ad set, not three. Three ad sets at $15 a day are three slow learners; one at $45 learns faster. For how to split campaigns and ad sets, see the separate guide to Facebook ads campaign structure.
  • Broad audience, Advantage+ on. A narrow audience costs more per lead and learns slower (targeting in 2026).
  • Accept “Learning limited”. Meta says it isn’t a penalty; judge the ad set by its leads and the share that buy (what it means).
  • Don’t optimise for clicks to “help learning”. Meta suggests a higher-funnel event if you can’t raise the budget (source), but for lead businesses that brings clicks, not leads (why).
  • Give it a full week before changing anything; raise in steps (how).

How a daily budget is spent

  • On days when better advertising opportunities are available, Meta may spend up to 75% over your daily budget.
  • For every week ending Saturday at midnight, spending won’t be more than 7 times your daily budget. (source) A month is about 30.4 days of budget.
  • Lifetime budgets suit a fixed date — a course start, an event; for a steady flow of leads, a daily budget is simpler.
  • Advantage+ campaign budget is best with two or more ad sets and may not spend your budget equally for each ad set (source).

Is there a minimum?

Meta’s pricing page suggests starting with at least $5 for your budget and to choose a duration over six days. (source) Real minimums may vary by country and objective (source); below them the ad set shows a “budget is too low” error and doesn’t run. Your account’s minimums are also available through the API (source).

What share of revenue businesses spend

Benchmarks of marketing spend help set a ceiling for all marketing — not a Facebook budget:

  • The CMO Survey, spring 2026 (US companies): marketing averaged 8.96% of revenue, with a median of 5%. Companies under $10 million in revenue reported 13.3%, but that’s only 20 answers (source).
  • Gartner puts marketing at 7.8% of revenue in 2026 — mostly companies with over $1 billion in revenue.
  • The “7–8% recommended by the SBA” you see quoted isn’t on the SBA’s site; its 2019 blog cites 1.08% on advertising and 7.9% on marketing from other sources (source).

The lead-based calculation above is the better guide: it ties spend to sales you can count.

Find out what your budget buys: Variafy

Variafy connects ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants to your Meta ad accounts. Ask “How should I split this budget, and where is money wasted?” — it recommends how to split a monthly pool across campaigns by the results each brought, never below your account’s minimum, finds spend with no results, and, with sales from your CRM, shows which campaigns bring customers. Budget changes are previewed with their effect on spend and run only after you confirm.

How we checked

Checked on 17 October 2026 against Meta’s pricing page and Business Help Center (minimum budgets, budget and delivery, learning limited, learning per ad set, daily budgets, Advantage+ campaign budget), Meta’s Marketing API reference on minimum budgets, WordStream and LocaliQ’s 2026 Facebook ads benchmarks, The CMO Survey (spring 2026), Gartner’s 2026 CMO spend survey as reported, and the SBA’s 2019 blog. Questions

How much should I spend on Facebook ads?

Work it out from leads: sales you want ÷ share of leads that buy = leads needed; × cost per lead = budget. Meta’s delivery learns best with a daily budget of at least 10× your cost per lead and about 50 leads a week per ad set.

How much should a small business spend on Facebook ads per month?

Enough to get a steady number of leads you can judge. At the 2026 US average of about $27 a lead, 50 leads a week costs about $6,000 a month per ad set; most small businesses spend less and accept slower learning with one broad ad set.

What is the minimum budget for Facebook ads?

Meta’s pricing page suggests starting with at least $5 over more than six days, but real minimums depend on country, objective and currency. Below the minimum the ad set shows a “budget is too low” error and doesn’t run.

Can Meta spend more than my daily budget?

Yes, up to 75% more on a given day, but no more than 7 times the daily budget in a week ending Saturday at midnight.

Is $10 a day enough for Facebook ads?

It can bring some leads, but rarely enough for Meta’s learning to finish: at $27 a lead, $10 a day is under 3 leads a week. Use one ad set with a broad audience and judge results over several weeks by leads that buy.
