What is a Facebook lead form — and when is it better than a landing page?

A Facebook lead form — Meta calls it an instant form — opens inside Facebook or Instagram when someone taps your ad, with their name, email and phone already filled in from their profile. They submit without visiting a website; you get the lead in Ads Manager, Leads Center or your CRM. It usually brings cheaper leads, and Meta’s own figure is 20% lower cost per qualified lead — from 15 tests reported by advertisers themselves. A landing page is better when people need to book a time, see full details or compare prices first. Running both in one campaign cut cost per lead by 60% on average in Meta’s tests.

What a Facebook lead form is

Lead ads with forms make it easy for potential customers to submit information and express interest in your business.

The form opens over the ad, so nobody waits for a page to load. Meta fills in what it knows: contact information, such as name, email address and phone number, may be prefilled for the person if they have already provided their information to Meta. (source) The person checks the details, answers your questions and taps submit — without leaving Facebook or Instagram.

You create it while setting up an ad with the Leads objective, or in advance under Instant forms. Advanced features are available only when you build the form in Ads Manager; Meta Business Suite makes only a simple contact form.

The three form types

What it doesWhere it runs
More volume (default)Quick to submit on a phone, built for the largest number of leadsAll placements that support lead ads
Higher intentAdds a review screen where people confirm their details before sendingFacebook and Instagram feeds on mobile
Rich creativeA more flexible, personalised form; the intro section is requiredThe Facebook app on mobile

From Meta’s help pages on form types (source). Meta publishes no figure for how much Higher intent raises the cost per lead. If leads don’t answer the phone, it’s the first thing to try — more in lead quality.

What goes into the form

  • Intro (optional): what you offer and what people will receive in return for submitting the form (source).
  • Prefill questions: name, email, phone and others taken from the profile; People can edit any prefill information except for their date of birth. (source)
  • Custom questions: You can add up to 15 custom questions (source) — multiple choice, short answer, appointment request. Conditional logic can screen people out, but Meta warns it may increase your cost per lead (source).
  • Privacy policy: Meta’s pages differ. One says Privacy Policy (Optional): A Privacy Policy is required to run instant forms on Facebook or Instagram (source); the form-creation guide marks the URL (Optional) (source). Check what your own form asks for in Ads Manager.
  • Message for leads: the screen after submitting, with a button to visit your website, call, book a time or chat on WhatsApp (source).

Fewer multiple choice questions results in more form submissions, whereas more multiple choice questions typically results in more quality leads.

Where the leads go

Leads appear in Ads Manager, on the Instant forms page in Meta Business Suite and in Leads Center, which needs no setup: leads generated from instant forms will be automatically sent, so there is no setup required. (source)

Meta keeps them for 90 days

Lead information is only available on Meta for 90 days (source). Connect your CRM, Google Sheets or an email alert so you call people within minutes and don’t lose older leads — how to send leads to Google Sheets.

Lead form vs landing page: what Meta’s numbers say

Meta’s resultHow it was measured
Instant form vs website form20% lower cost per qualified lead15 A/B tests, Nov 2022–Feb 2023, results reported by advertisers, 86% confidence
Both together vs website alone60% lower cost per lead, 125% more leads22 A/B tests, Jan 2023–Apr 2024, cost per lead, not quality

Sources: Meta, April 2024 and Meta’s lead ads page. The first figure compares forms optimised for conversion leads with websites optimised for conversions. The second is website plus form against website alone — it doesn’t say the form beat the website. And with both destinations, Maximize number of leads is the only performance goal (source), so you can’t optimise for qualified leads.

Blogs promising leads “2–5 times cheaper” on forms show no method; we didn’t use them.

When a landing page is better

Meta’s own FAQ lists when to send people to your website: to Take specific actions like booking an appointment or generating a quote., to share sensitive details, or to View the full details of a higher consideration product or service before purchasing or submitting an inquiry. (source)

  • Choose the form for a free consultation, a callback, a price list or a trial lesson — quick decisions on a phone.
  • Choose a website for booking a specific slot, an expensive treatment or course people compare first, or when your page already converts well. For quotes, the path to an agreed estimate is in our guide to Facebook ads for home services.
  • Test both if you’re unsure — as two versions in an A/B test, judged by leads that buy.

A website also lets you build audiences from visitors with the pixel. If forms bring leads that never answer, see leads that don’t convert. For bookings, a preferred time is kept apart from a confirmed one in our guide to Facebook ads for salons.

Questions you can’t ask

Meta doesn’t allow asking for sensitive information such as health conditions, income, credit score or debt without its prior written permission: If your instant form includes any questions that are found to violate the Advertising Standards, your lead ad will not run. (source) Don’t repeat questions the prefill already covers. Housing, employment and credit ads in the US and Canada have extra limits — special ad categories.

See which forms bring customers: Variafy

Variafy connects ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants to your Meta ad accounts. Ask “Is the lead form or the website bringing cheaper leads?” — it compares your campaigns’ spend, leads and cost per lead, and with sales from your CRM, which of them brought customers. It doesn’t create or edit instant forms or download the leads themselves: that needs permissions Meta hasn’t granted yet.

How we checked

Checked on 17 October 2026 against Meta for Business (lead ads with forms, April 2024 news on instant forms), Meta’s Business Help Center (form types, creating forms, intro, prefill and custom questions, conditional logic, message for leads, downloading leads, Leads Center, website and instant forms, prohibited questions — several read in a browser on 15 October) and Meta’s lead ads developer guide. Questions

What is a Facebook lead form?

An instant form that opens inside Facebook or Instagram when someone taps a lead ad. Contact fields are prefilled from their profile, they answer your questions and submit without visiting a website.

Is a Facebook lead form better than a landing page?

Often cheaper per lead: Meta reports 20% lower cost per qualified lead from 15 self-reported tests. A landing page is better for booking a time, quotes or services people study before enquiring. Judge by leads that buy.

Where do Facebook lead form leads go?

To Ads Manager, the Instant forms page in Meta Business Suite and Leads Center. Meta keeps them for 90 days, so connect a CRM, Google Sheets or alerts to keep them.

How do I create a lead form on Facebook?

In Ads Manager, create a campaign with the Leads objective, choose Instant forms as the conversion location, then create a form: type, intro, questions, privacy policy link and the message after submitting.

How many questions should a Facebook lead form have?

As few as you need to qualify a lead. Meta says fewer multiple choice questions bring more submissions and more questions bring better leads; you can add up to 15 custom questions.
